Description Technical Specs

Continuing his exploration of "architecture as autobiography," documentarian Heinz Emigholz focuses here on the work of Swiss artist, civil engineer, and legendary bridge builder Robert Maillart. On a basic level, Maillart's Bridges is a study of reinforced concrete, which sounds admittedly dull on paper. However, Emigholz skews facts and dates in favor of freeform visual poetry, using shots of Maillart's revolutionary bridges to convey the creativity necessary to turn cold, hard concrete into curved, soaring, expressive structures. In doing so, the film captures "our potential capacity to intuit life through the man-made forms around us" (Nicole Armour, Film Comment). In German with English subtitles.
