Description

This is Moholy-Nagy’s first film, where his camera reveled in the hustle and bustle of the harbor life. The documentary has three parts. The first presents the city’s “façade”: its boulevards and quays, grand apartment buildings, terraces, and street life; the final section responds by exposing the poverty, filth, darkness, and violence hidden in working-class neighborhoods located immediately alongside the quays. Laying bare the reality behind the stone facades of contemporary Marseille, Moholy revealed not only the city’s construction but also its unfit living conditions and profound social inequality. In black & white, and silent with no audio.
