Description

A bold, dramatic attack on the treatment of women in post-revolutionary Iran by the country's most important and outspoken feminist filmmaker. The story follows the friendship of two university students. While one is able to find a good job and a happy marriage, the other is subjected to the most severe inequities of the male-dominated, fundamentalist society. She is pursued by a stalker who commits an act of violence, but her "improper" independence is also blamed for the attack. Her father commits her to an arranged marriage in which her past liberties are denied and her spirit is broken. Government censors held up Milani's script for seven years, but the film became a major success with audiences. "...impressive, unsettling, deeply felt..." (Lawrence Van Gelder, New York Times). In Farsi with English subtitles.

Tahmineh Milani---Iran---1999---96 mins.
