Before making Night Train and Mother Joan of the Angels, Polish filmmaker Jerzy Kawalerowicz crafted this controversial conspiracy thriller that presents three possible accounts of a dead man's life and murder a la Rashomon. Though Shadow established him as one of the early leaders of the Polish School, it did not sit well with authorities, as all the key players--security agents, detectives, coroners, suspicious officials--are immersed in an heavy atmosphere that screams repression. Nominated for the Golden Palm at the 1956 Cannes Film Festival. In Polish with English subtitles.
