La Bataille du Rail (France, 1946, 85 mins.), a courageous film from noted French director Rene Clement (Forbidden Games), was completed during the final months of WWII under extremely dangerous conditions. Using a cast of non-professionals, Clement tells the story of French railway workers who bravely battle the Nazis on many fronts, making possible the Allied invasion of 1944. Shot in a gritty semi-documentary style, Clement's film has been compared to Rossellini's groundbreaking neorealist masterpiece Open City. This is joined by Somewhere in Europe (Hungary, 1947, 100 mins.), Geza von Radvanyi's gritty postwar drama that tells of a graying musician (Artur Somlay) who adopts misfit children orphaned by the war.
