Description Technical Specs

A collection of two classic films that convey how the horrors of World War II affected ordinary men, women, and children on European soil. La Bataille du Rail (France, 1946, 85 mins.), a courageous film from noted French director Rene Clement (Forbidden Games), was completed during the final months of WWII under extremely dangerous conditions. Using a cast of non-professionals, Clement tells the story of French railway workers who bravely battle the Nazis on many fronts, making possible the Allied invasion of 1944. Shot in a gritty semi-documentary style, Clement's film has been compared to Rossellini's groundbreaking neorealist masterpiece Open City. "The most important film [...] about the French resistance" (The Guardian). In French with English subtitles. This is joined by Somewhere in Europe (Hungary, 1947, 100 mins.), Geza von Radvanyi's gritty postwar drama that tells of a graying musician (Artur Somlay) who adopts misfit children orphaned by the war. Hiding out together in a bombed-out castle, the refugees come to rely on one another for friendship and survival. In Hungarian with English subtitles. 2-DVD set.
