ANTONIONI'S CHINA (CHUNG KUO - CINA)

Following Zabriskie Point, Antonioni was invited by the Chinese government to film a documentary on the country for Italian television. The three-plus-hour color film that resulted, however, was rejected by Chinese officials and the press for supposedly portraying the Cultural Revolution in a negative light. The charge could not be more off base, and it made Chung kuo/Cina nearly impossible to see for years. "...a tender (but very much off-the-record) picture of a society in transformation and shyly opening itself up to a foreigner's curious gaze" (Oxford History of World Cinema). "...among Antonioni's finest documentary achievements..." (A History of Narrative Film). In Italian and Mandarin with French subtitles.

INDIA (ROSSELLINI)

Unlike most of his neorealist contemporaries, Roberto Rossellini's concerns were not just political, but global and spiritual. Invited by the prime minister to come film in India in 1957, Rossellini made this influential semi-documentary and a more scattered ten-part television series. The feature, India, Matri Buhmi, is filled with gorgeous color photography and long takes of life in India--its people, customs, wildlife, natural terrain, and modernization. If that's not spicy enough for you, here's some arthouse gossip: Rossellini's writing partner on this project, Sonali DasGupta, became a romantic partner as well, leading to an unsightly divorce from Ingrid Bergman, and his fourth marriage to DasGupta.

Italian neo-realist master Vittorio De Sica lost out to David O. Selznick for control of this drama about the ill-fated romance between an American woman (Jennifer Jones) and her Italian lover (Montgomery Clift). Much of De Sica's distinctive touch remains, but Selznick (Jones' husband at the time) brought in Truman Capote to juice up Cesare Zavattini's story and later cut the film by more than 24 minutes for its American release. What remains is a compromised but still compelling work, standing halfway between Italian neo-realism and Hollywood melodrama. De Sica's 87-minute cut, titled Terminal Station, was released in other countries and received an Vittorio De Sica---USA/Italy---1954---63 mins.
