In the early years of feature film production, Fox Film Corporation launched a series known as the "Sunset Kiddies" movies--lavish productions with most of the central roles played by children. Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp is one of these historic films. The cast of youngsters is headed by 6-year-old Francis Carpenter as Aladdin and 7-year-old Virginia Lee Corbin as the Princess who falls in love with him. Adult co-star Elmo Lincoln (the screen's first Tarzan) plays the towering genie that emerges from the lamp. Originally an 8-reel film, only 4 reels have survived the ravages of time, but even in the film's severely abridged current form, it is a rarity well worth seeing. Chester M. Franklin/Sidney A. Franklin---USA---1917---41 mins.

This set includes four horror classics from the silent era: the UFA-inspired gothic drama The Man Who Laughs (Paul Leni, 1927, 110 mins.); The Penalty (Wallace Worsley, 1920, 82 mins.), a gruesome tale of revenge starring a contorted Lon Chaney as a legless man; the first great American horror film, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (John S. Robertson, 1920, 96 mins.), starring John Barrymore; and Paul Leni's masterfully crafted "old dark house" chiller The Cat and the Canary (1927, 82 mins.). These are joined by the haunting documentary Kingdom of Shadows (Bret Wood, 1998, 70 mins.), featuring footage of nearly 50 of the most famous and most obscure horror films from the turn of the century to the end of the silent era. Rod Steig er narrates this look at the influence of German expressionism, the psychological roots of American horror, and the genre's trajectory in sound. USA---1920-1998---455 mins.

With few of her films surviving, Nell Shipman has become a nearly forgotten name in film history. As a Canadian and a woman, Shipman was a pioneer in her industry--an independent producer, writer, actress and conservationist who starred in her own films. Two of these rarities are included on this volume. Both represent the kind of outdoor adventures that were Shipman's specialty. Back to God's Country (David Hartford, 1919) is based on a short story by James Oliver Curwood that was filmed again in 1927 and 1953. In this version, Shipman plays a woman trapped on a ship with a murderous fugitive determined to have his way with her. Something New (Bert Van Tuyle, 1920), based on Shipman's own story, is a thrilling comic western where the hero comes to the rescue of a kidnapped girl in a 1920 Maxwell Sedan. The film boasts some amazing stunt sequences for its era. Both films were digitally mastered from the original 35mm film materials and feature new musical scores Bert Van Tuyle/David M.
