BARBARA STANWYCK COLLECTION (UNIVERSAL BACKLOT SERIES)

|

A collection of six harder-to-find gems starring the versatile star, Barbara Stanwyck. The star "has a distinctive effect on two films in which Douglas Sirk directed her...Stanwyck brought to life the lost years of the lonely outsider in search of a life she left behind" (The New Yorker). In All I Desire (Douglas Sirk, 1953, 80 mins.), she plays a woman of the theater who is driven from a small Wisconsin town by scandal. Now she hopes to return to her estranged family. Her husband (Richard Carlson) is now seeing a school teacher (Maureen O'Sullivan). Aside from this potential love triangle, there is plenty of drama in the form of her previous lover, the man who hastened her original departure. She also stars in Douglas Sirk's There's Always Tomorrow (1956, 84 mins.), a melodrama about an aging executive and family man (Fred MacMurray) who lost his spark in both spheres. This makes a chance encounter with an old flame (Stanwyck) all the more alluring. Although not revered like Written on the Wind (released later that year), There's Always Tomorrow is an excellent widescreen soap from a master stylist. In Internes Can't Take Money (Alfred Santell, 1937, 79 mins.), Stanwyck is the patient of a young doctor played by Joel McCrea. Though the doctor falls in love, his patient has other pressing needs. She must find her daughter. The child was hidden by her criminal husband before he died. Now she will use any means to find the lost girl, even the abilities of the intern. Stanwyck and McCrea reteamed for The Great Man's Lady (William Wellman, 1942, 91 mins.), a melodrama about life in the old days. Stanwyck is the wife of a town founder and rather consciously decides to defer to this great man's glory. As an old widow, the actual story of her husband's life as a pioneer can be told. It seems she significantly influenced and shaped the town with her courage and ability. The last two films in this Universal set are the rarest. In the light, equine-based comedy The Bride Wore Boots (Irving Pichel, 1946, 85 mins.), Stanwyck is married to historian Robert Cummings, a historian who hates her love of horses and vice versa. When Diana Lynn and Patric Knowles butt in, "the story casts off all restraint and goes slapstick with a vengeance" (Variety). Lastly, The Lady Gambles (Michael Gordon, 1949, 99 mins.) is a ridiculous drama about a writer (Robert Preston) and his wife who take a trip to Las Vegas for a story. She is left with just enough free time to develop a gambling addiction and topple her happy marriage. "She plays a gambling lush with as much lip-licking and jittering as Ray Milland put into The Lost Week-End" (The New York Times).
