Takashi Miike's remake of the 1963 jidai-geki of the same name is faithful to the original plot, but the violence and visual style are all his own. Set in 1844 towards the end of the Shogunate, a sadistic lord, Naritsugu (Goro Inagaki), is in line to take the throne. Fearful of the abominations to come, some royals hire an elder samurai (Koji Yakusho, Tokyo Sonata) to sever Naritsugu's bloodline. In true mythic fashion, the swordsman assembles a small band of brothers to help lure Naritsugu and his army into a tiny, booby-trapped village, where the outnumbered men will pounce. Seven Samurai is an obvious point of reference, but by the big finale, we've learned less about the jaded assassins and more about the glory of going out in a bloodbath. Nominated for the Golden Lion at Venice. In Japanese with English subtitles.

Cult director Takashi Miike's cinematic outrage is an unforgettable horror shocker that builds from quietly creepy scenes to an explosion of some of the most graphic and disturbing images ever put on the screen. A middle-aged widower is encouraged to start dating again, and his TV producer pal sets up a phony project so his friend can "audition" potential mates. He seems to find a perfect match with a shy, beautiful young woman, but she is not who she appears to be. "...a lethally poised Venus flytrap of a movie" (Dennis Lim, The Village Voice). This is the uncut version, absolutely not for the squeamish. In Japanese with English subtitles. Takashi Miike---Japan---1999---115 mins.

Never one to settle into a genre, cult director Takashi Miike adapts Ikki Kajiwara and Hisao Maki's homoerotic prison novel into an ambiguous drama that keeps audiences at bay with Godardian devices, but invites attention with its visual brilliance. Jun (Ryuhei Matsuda), a young gay man charged with murder, is taken under the wing of Shiro (Masanobu Ando), a tattoo-covered brute with a tormented childhood. Their surreal journey plays out against the very real backdrop of a prison murder investigation. "Big Bang Love joins Gozu and Izo in the Miike pantheon of hard-edged ontological essays pushing the limit of representation" (Nathan Lee, Village Voice).
