Presented by Human Rights Watch and nominated for the Writers Guild of America's documentary screenplay award, The Camden 28 tells the story of 28 conscientious objectors to the Vietnam war, who in 1971 planned to infiltrate a draft board office in Camden, New Jersey, and destroy its records. However, the plot leaked to the authorities and the activists were soon arrested by the FBI. A wealth of archival materials and interviews with members of the Camden 28 and a FBI agent involved help relate this lost story of activism betrayed to a new generation. "...it's easy to be seduced by The Camden 28--an inspiration" (The Village Voice). Anthony Giacchino---USA---2007---83 mins.

FTA/ FREE THE ARMY

Though the poster read "The show the Pentagon couldn't stop," someone did a fine job of keeping this documentary about the "FTA" anti-war stage show from circulating in theaters for longer than a week. Released briefly in 1972, this raucous film travels with Jane Fonda, Donald Sutherland, and their politicized vaudeville U.S.O. show, "Free the Army," as they tour military bases in the Pacific during Vietnam. Theories about the film's cover-up might not be off the mark, but the legend is not the only reason to seek out this combination of satirical theater, protest songs, and real GI testimonials. Featuring Len Chandler, Rita Martinson, Paul Mooney, and Peter Boyle. Francine Parker---USA---1972---97 mins.

This political documentary looks back on the life of Daniel Ellsberg, the straight-shooting military analyst who leaked the top-secret Pentagon Papers to the press in 1971, thus spilling the White House's beans on the state of the Vietnam War and paving the way for Nixon's resignation. Informative, connected talking heads from all sides share their input on the leak and its aftermath, as does an elderly Ellsberg. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary and winner of the Freedom of Expression Award from the National Board of Review.

ON THE BOWERY: THE FILMS OF LIONEL ROGOSIN, VOL. 1

Exploring the underworld of New York City's skid row, Lionel Rogosin developed his signature style. After months drinking with men he met on the Bowery, Rogosin worked with his buddies to write a screenplay that reflected their lives--and then cast them as themselves. On the Bowery (65 mins.) chronicles three days in the drinking life of Ray Salyer, a part-time railroad worker adrift on skid row. When the film opened it 1956, it exploded on the screen, burning away years of Hollywood artifice, jump-starting the post-war American independent film movement, and earning an Oscar nomination. Good Times, Wonderful Times (1964, 69 mins.) was Rogosin's powerful response to militarism, fascism, and the Vietnam conflict. For two years, Rogosin traveled to 12 countries, amassing footage of war atrocities from national archives. He then interspersed these harrowing images with scenes of a London cocktail party's inane chatter. The juxtaposition satirizes the tragic irresponsibility of modern man. Out (1957, 25 mins.), a documentary by Rogosin made for the United Nations, tells the plight of Hungarian refugees fleeing to Austria in the aftermath of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956.
