CAMOUFLAGE (BARWY OCHRONNE)

Out of Stock

Zanussi's sixth film, set in an intellectual milieu, tackles the theme of survival in the rat race, and the extent to which one should bend one's principles. Jakub, the past master at survival, assumes the necessary camouflage: "Survive and you win; perish and you're proved wrong." He engages his colleague, the younger Jaroslaw, in a game which ends in desolation and stalemate. With Zbigniew Zapasiewicz and Piotr Garlicki. In Polish with English subtitles.

"Of the third postwar generation of Polish directors...the most important is Krzysztof Zanussi" (David Cook, A History of Narrative Film). This collection includes three of Zanussi's most stimulating films: A Woman's Decision (Bilans Kwartalny, 1974, 91 mins.) is a beautifully-photographed, hushed drama about a modern woman (Maja Komorowska)--a wife, a mother, an accountant, a union representative and an adulteress--who is slowly being drawn and quartered by her decisions in life. "Nobody since Bergman has seen a woman character more clearly" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times). Winner of the OCIC Award at the Berlin Film Festival. Spiral (Spirala, 1978, 83 mins.) is a psychological portrait of a young man's undoing. Without explanation, Jan Nowicki drives to a snowy resort, throws his keys off a slope, goes inside to taunt and terrify the guests, then vanishes into the snow. The lodgers soon find him barely alive and later visit him in an institution, where they discover the source of his downward spiral. Music by Wojiech Kilar (Bram Stoker's Dracula). Winner of the Ecumenical Jury Prize at Cannes. Lastly, A Year of the Quiet Sun (Rok Spokojnego Slonca, 1984, 105 mins.), a "small, quiet film of enormous power" (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times), is the story of a Polish widow who meets an American soldier involved in war crimes investigation following World War II. Although they can communicate only through gesture, they find much to share. The exquisite, sad beauty of this film inspired Ebert to describe Krzysztof Zanussi as "arguably the best filmmaker in Europe right now." Maja Komorowska (The Decalogue, The Maids of Wilko) and Scott Wilson (In Cold Blood, The Ninth Configuration) star. A Golden Lion winner at the Venice Film Festival. In Polish with English subtitles.
