Set in the 1840s, when pantomime and melodrama were at their height on Paris' famed theater street, the Boulevard du Crime, Marcel Carne's delicate yet elaborate portrait of the actors and thieves who made the Boulevard their home has all the passion, intelligence and authority of a truly great work of art. "...it unfolds new meanings with each viewing" (Pauline Kael). "Anyone who can resist its charm deserves never to see Paris" (Andrew Sarris). In French with English subtitles. Marcel Carne---France---1945---190 mins.

The middle film in Marcel Carne's famed "romantic trilogy", which begins with Quai des Brumes, North Hotel is a haunting exploration of a doome d love affair. The titular Hotel du Nord is supposed to be the end of the road for lovers Renee (Annabella) and Pierre (Jean-Pierre Aumont), but the latter is unable to consummate their suicide pact. With its luminous set pieces (including an exact recreation of one side of Paris's Canal St-Martin) and expressionistic lighting, the film is "necessary viewing for anyone even vaguely interested in French cinema" (DVD Times). In French with English Marcel Carne---France---1938---92 mins.

By 1954 his most influential films were already behind him, but this late-career comedy by Marcel Carne is nevertheless a warm and entertaining crowd pleaser. The great Jean Gabin stars as a washed-up prizefighter who's looking to pass the torch to a worthy successor. The seasoned fighter throws his weight behind a tough-nosed day laborer, but a pair of strong-willed women complicate the plan. With Arletty, Marie Daems, and Roland Lesaffre. In French WITHOUT English subtitles. Marcel Carne---France---1954---100 mins.

Marcel Carne's remake of Emil Zola's naturalist classic (attempted previously by Jacques Feyder) is a shadowy, smoldering film noir, made after Carne's 1940s heyday but on par with classic film noirs of the post-war period. Simone Signoret plays the title character, an oppressed housewife who breaks the shackles of her tepid, bourgeoisie marriage with a torrid affair with the blue-collar Laurent (Raf Vallone). In quintessential Zola fashion, Therese is ultimately unable to transcend the hollowness of her aspirations. In French Marcel Carne---France---1953---102 mins.
