GOTO: ISLAND OF LOVE
Our Price: $24.95

Walerian Borowczyk's mid-career masterpiece is at once a political allegory, a   comic tragedy, and a bold work of formal experimentation. Set entirely on a      mythic island that adheres to a barbaric civil code, the film follows the        plight of a man who is forced to take part in a death match for sport. One of  the strangest of the characteristically surreal works by Borowczyk, Goto boasts an evocative mix of color and black-and-white images and stellar        performances from Pierre Brasseur, Ligia Branice, and Guy Saint Jean. In         French with English subtitles.                                                 Walerian Borowczyk---France---1968---90 mins.

Three provocative classics from animator, artist, pornographer, and revolutionary Walerian Borowczyk, a key figure in European cult cinema from the second half of the 20th century. In Immoral Women (1979, 115 mins.), the follow-up to Immoral Tales, Borowczyk presents three controversial and daring tales of erotica. Marina Pierro, Gaelle Legrand, and former Disney child star Pascale Christophe star in segments involving muses in ancient Rome, artists, clergy, abduction, rape, bunnies, and other four-legged friends. For Private Collections (1979, 103 mins.), producer Pierre Braunberger invited three famous directors of erotica (Just Jaeckin, Shuji Terayama, and Borowczyk) to lens some of their most sensual fantasies for full release in one film. Jaeckin's contribution is the story of a castaway sailor rescued by a tribe of beautiful women. Laura Gemser leads the group. A crazy woman's song causes a Japanese boy to fall under its spell in Terayama's erotic short segment. Finally, a Parisian gentlemen is in for a surprise with a prostitute in Borowczyk's tale. Lastly, in Art of Love (1983, 97 mins.), Borowczyk takes viewers back to Roman times, with Ovid explaining positions to Roman lads as lovely ladies and men demonstrate in softcore detail. A similar slice of erotic education was offered in Monty Python's The Meaning of Life the very same year, only it was intentionally funny in that case. In English and French with English subtitles. ADULTS ONLY.
