A collection of two classic films that convey how the horrors of World War II affected ordinary men, women, and children on European soil. La Bataille du Rail (France, 1946, 85 mins.), a courageous film from noted French director Rene Clement (Forbidden Games), was completed during the final months of WWII under extremely dangerous conditions. Using a cast of non-professionals, Clement tells the story of French railway workers who bravely battle the Nazis on many fronts, making possible the Allied invasion of 1944. Shot in a gritty semi-documentary style, Clement's film has been compared to Rossellini's groundbreaking neorealist masterpiece Open City. "The most important film [...] about the French resistance" (The Guardian). In French with English subtitles. This is joined by Somewhere in Europe (Hungary, 1947, 100 mins.), Geza von Radvanyi's gritty postwar drama that tells of a graying musician (Artur Somlay) who adopts misfit children orphaned by the war. Hiding out together in a bombed-out castle, the refugees come to rely on one another for friendship and survival. In Hungarian with English subtitles. 2-DVD set.

ECLIPSE SERIES 34: JEAN GREMILLON DURING THE OCCUPATION
Our Price: $44.95
Copies on the way

Though he made films in the silent era and would make numerous documentaries, Jean Gremillon’s best dramatic work was produced during the German Occupation of France. In Remorques (Stormy Waters, 1941, 84 mins.), Jean Gabin stars as the tough captain of a rescue ship, who has an affair with a beautiful woman (Michele Morgan) after rescuing her during a fierce gale. Their romance is interrupted when Gabin's wife falls critically ill. Lumiere d’Ete (1943, 110 mins.), written by Jacques Prevert (Children of Paradise), is a tragicomic tale about an opulent mountaintop hotel filled with guests who are literally and figuratively living on the edge. Gremillon’s dark portrayal of the ruling classes did not go unnoticed, as the film was banned until after the Occupation. This was followed by Le Ciel Est a Vous (The Woman Who Dared, 1944, 107 mins.), a lovely film about a working class woman (Madeleine Renaud) who becomes obsessed with flying and, with the support of her ex-fighter pilot husband, breaks the world’s record for a non-stop flight. To make an airplane film with scant aerial photography is daring, but to imply that women should strive for more in Vichy France is downright brave. In French with English subtitles.

Jean Gremillon---France---19431-1944---300 mins.
