ANTONIONI'S CHINA (CHUNG KUO - CINA)

Following Zabriskie Point, Antonioni was invited by the Chinese government to film a documentary on the country for Italian television. The three-plus-hour color film that resulted, however, was rejected by Chinese officials and the press for supposedly portraying the Cultural Revolution in a negative light. The charge could not be more off base, and it made Chung kuo/Cina nearly impossible to see for years. "...a tender (but very much off-the-record) picture of a society in transformation and shyly opening itself up to a foreigner's curious gaze" (Oxford History of World Cinema). "...among Antonioni's finest documentary achievements..." (A History of Narrative Film). In Italian and Mandarin with French subtitles.

Alida Valli and Steve Cochran are featured in the story of a jilted husband who wanders with his daughter from village to village and woman to woman until, after a last gaze at his wife, he falls to his death. Set in the desolate landscapes of Antonioni's own childhood in the Po Valley, the plot "develops no longer explicitly through major events but implicitly in silent interstices between minor events" (Seymour Chatman). A breakthrough work from Antonioni's neo-realist period. Italian with English subtitles. Michelangelo Antonioni---Italy---1957---116 mins.

Michelangelo Antonioni's auspicious narrative debut heralded an important shift in the direction of post-war Italian cinema. Hushed, austere, and emotionally intense, this well-observed drama centers on the relationship between Guido (Massimo Girotti) and his former flame Paola (Lucia Bose), whose passions are re-ignited after a lengthy separation. Antonioni's careful treatment of shifting power relationships and the vagaries of infidelity are themes that the auteur would explore for the rest of his career. In Italian Michelangelo Antonioni---Italy---1950---98 mins.
