The beautiful models of a luxurious fashion salon are being fiendishly slain one by one. The killer is a masked maniac wearing a black glove, who wants to keep the dark secrets of the salon from being revealed. The director creates a superb, atmospheric setting filled with horror, dread, and the kind of gore that most American films wouldn't touch at the time. Extremely influential on the Italian "giallo" style. Cameron Mitchell and Eva Bartok are featured. Mario Bava---Italy/Germany/France---1964---88 mins.

Many genre aficionados consider this the first of the Italian "giallo" films--horror movies or thrillers that emphasized the gruesome methods of the killers. An American woman on vacation in Rome witnesses a murder that seems to echo a slaying committed ten years earlier. As she learns more about the unsolved crimes of the "Alphabet Killer," she becomes the next potential victim. This is the original Italian version of the film released in the U.S. as The Evil Eye. There are significant differences in the footage used and the sequence of the scenes. Leticia Roman and John Saxon star. In Italian Mario Bava---Italy---1963---86 mins.

This offbeat combination of sword-and-sandal and horror action marked Mario Bava's emergence as a master with color in film. Reg Park plays Mr. Muscles, who goes to Hell, literally, to fetch a magical plant that will heal an ailing princess. Once in Hades, he encounters Christopher Lee as an evil servant of the god Pluto, rock men, seas of lava and nubile maidens in chains. "...a textbook case of the redemption of a foolish, semi-coherent plot by the kind of stunning visuals more often seen in the work of Cocteau or Dreyer" (Gary Morris, Bright Lights Film Journal). Looking to exploit the blockbuster commercial success of The Exorcist, Italian producer Alfredo Leone re-structured Mario Bava's horror film, Lisa and the Devil, to create a new feature aimed directly at the American market. New scenes were shot, taking the story in a different direction than the original. Elke Sommer plays a tourist who encounters the Devil himself (Telly Savalas) while on vacation. Robert Alda (who does not appear in the original Bava version) co-stars as an American priest who tries to exorcise the evil from her soul. This is the original, uncut, European version of the film that many credit as the starting point for the famous Italian gothic horror style. Released in America as The Devil's Commandment (with some alternate footage), the movie is partly based on the legend of Countess Bathory, with a vampire seductress bathing in the blood of virgins to stay young. Mad scientists and reanimated corpses are also thrown into the creepy proceedings. Mario Bava was the film's cinematographer and he took over as director for the last two days of shooting when Riccardo Freda left in a dispute with producers. The spirit of a man murdered by his wife and her lover possesses the body of their son to take revenge from beyond the grave. Mario Bava's Exorcist-inspired film is a prime example of the gory but atmospheric fare that has dominated Italian horror since the mid-1960's. Released as Beyond the Door II in the U.S., the film has nothing to do with its 1974 predecessor other than a common theme of demonic possession. Bava's son Lamberto (later a horror specialist in his own right) contributed to the Mario Bava---Italy---1977---92 mins.

This is the uncut, European version of Mario Bava's controversial horror film, released in a censored version in the U.S. as What!. Christopher Lee plays the disturbed son of a nobleman who lusts after his brother's wife. When Lee's character is murdered, some evil doings make many believe his spirit has returned from beyond the grave. But everything is not what it seems in this gothic tale. Although hardly explicit by today's standards, the depiction of some sadomasochistic encounters between Lee and the lady he desires resulted in some heavy cuts when this film played abroad.
