Bela Lugosi stars in his most famous role as the debonair Count in this classic version of Bram Stoker's tale of the bloodsucking fiend. Despite its rather stagy second half (the film was largely based on the theatrical adaptation), this film has some memorably atmospheric sequences, thanks in large part to Karl Freund's fine cinematography. Dwight Frye makes a memorably demented Renfield and, of course, Lugosi is marvelous. Even more than the novel, this film shaped the many remakes and variations that followed. Tod Browning---USA---1931---75 mins.
