Four blood-soaked examples of extreme Asian horror, all of them guaranteed to    prevent a good night's sleep. Organ (Kei Fujiwara, 1996, 105 mins.) is     the graphically violent story of a Tokyo policeman who falls victim to a         Yakuza body-parts selling syndicate. Horrifically unsettling, the film caused  an uproar of controversy upon its theatrical release. Evil Dead Trap     (Toshiharu Ikeda, 1988, 102 mins.) was a runaway horror hit and eventually     spawned a pair of sequels. The film follows a talk show hostess who receives   a brutal snuff film in her mail before becoming the subject of the killer's new  feature. Entrails of a Virgin (Kazuo Komizu, 1986, 73 mins.) is roughly  as disturbing as its title implies. Komizu's film chronicles the horrors of a  small group who fall prey to a mud-covered swamp monster. Entrails of a       Beautiful Woman (Kazuo Komizu, 1986, 68 mins.), the film's explicit         follow-up, tells the story of a young doctor who falls prey to an evil Yakuza  Kei Fujiwara/Toshiharu Ikeda/Kazuo Komizu---Japan---1986-1996---348 mins.

BONG JOON-HO COLLECTION (HOST / MOTHER / BARKING DOGS NEVER BITE)
Our Price: $49.98

Three inventive horror films from South Korea's Bong Joon-ho. The director's first feature, Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000, 106 mins.), is an inspired dark comedy about a young, tenure-seeking professor and soon-to-be father (Lee Sung-jae). Somewhere outside the tiny apartment he shares with his wife, a dog is barking--nonstop. In addition to mounting academic and parental pressures, the constant yapping is slowly driving him mad. He eventually snaps and murders the neighbor's dog, but the barking doesn't stop. Neither does the killing. The Host (2006, 119 mins.), a box-office busting horror flick, takes the slapstick excess of Kung Fu Hustle and throws it at Godzilla's exoskeleton. A giant, slimy, shape-shifting creature rises from the Han River and attacks an onlooking mass, seizing a young girl, Hyun-seo (Ko Ah-sung), and plunging back into the depths. The government tries to quarantine the victims by claiming the monster is carrying a virus unleashed by the American military. With Mother (2009, 128 mins.), Joon-ho delivers a more serious, but equally grotesque crime thriller about the older, single mother (Kim Hye-ja) of a grown son (Do-joon) who is "on the slow side." On the street one night, he drunkenly crosses paths with a schoolgirl and follows her until she vanishes into an alley. When her body turns up mutilated, the police quickly arrest and convict him. But mother is a madwoman, and she will stop at nothing to prove his innocence. In Korean with English subtitles.

Bong Joon-ho---South Korea---2000-2009---358 mins.
