The Hadhramaut region in the southeast of Yemen is well known for its mudbrick architecture. Throughout the centuries, the population has developed very sophisticated building techniques and created a unique architectural environment. Spectacular structures such as 10-story mudbrick tower houses rise up from the valley's floor. In interviews throughout the documentary, the masons describe their working techniques and the challenges they face with the introduction of new, imported building materials. The documentary is an archival record for the Yemenis--and for the world--of a stunning architectural environment that is rapidly disappearing. Arabic with English Caterina Borelli---USA---1999---52 mins.

When the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, it literally left a vacant, awkward hole in the city. In this symphony of a city, filmmaker Hubertus Siegert documents the architecture that came to inhabit this zone from roughly 1996-2000, while also reflecting broadly on the cycle of wreckage and renaissance that marks most major cities. "Babylon comes with a perspective that non-Germans might never have considered...Babylon is about architecture as a balm" (The New York Times). Featuring music by proto-industrial band Einsturzende Neubauten, whose name translates to "collapsing new buildings." In German with English subtitles. Hubertus Siegert---Germany---2001---88 mins.

Heinz Emigholz, the premiere purveyor of architectural oddities (Sullivan's Bridges, Goff in the Desert), meticulously documents 15 rooms of the enormous Villa Cargnacco in Lombardy, Italy, designed by proto-fascist poet Gabriele D'Annunzio (1863-1938). The controversial figure spent 17 years designing the Vittoriale, a state museum on Lake Garda, and furnishing the Villa Cargnacco, which is part of the grand complex. This unusual documentary resulted from a photography session in the villa, when four friends--cinematographers Irene von Alberti, Elfi Mikesch, Klaus Wyborny and Heinz Emigholz--simultaneously filmed the rooms and furnishings of the villa in their own specific styles. In German with English subtitles. Heinz Emigholz---Germany---2005---52 mins.

In this unique documentary, German filmmaker Heinz Emigholz presents the work of inventive American architect Bruce Goff. Apprenticed at age 12 but never formally educated as an architect, Goff's work displays a unique style that sets it apart from most 20th-century architecture. The Episcopal Church in Tulsa built in the 1920s is a towering Art Deco icon, while the Hopewell Baptist Church in Edmond resembles a strange futuristic concrete teepee that challenges the surrounding landscape. Through filmed photographs, Emigholz brilliantly exposes the hidden details of Goff's fascinating structures. In German with English subtitles.
