Ingmar Bergman's intense chamber drama was Ingrid Bergman's first Swedish film   in almost 40 years and also her last. EARLY BERGMAN (SET 5 DISCS)
Our Price: $69.95
Out of Stock

Ingmar Bergman has become one the most important directors in all of Western     cinema, but there was a time when his films were gritty and, dare I say, not     perfect (gasp!). It's these early pictures that laid the groundwork for his      bleak, metaphysical masterpieces to come: Torment (Hets, Alf       Sjoberg, 1944, 101 mins.), Bergman's first screenplay, is about a sadistic     Latin teacher nicknamed "Caligula;" Crisis (1946, 93 mins.), Ingmar's    directorial debut, follows an estranged mother as she takes her rural daught  er to Stockholm--the big city with a seedy underbelly; Port of Call (1948,  97 mins.), a direct, almost-documentary telling of the love that grows between a seaman and a young woman with a troubled past; Thirst (1949, 84        mins.), an elliptical adaptation of Birgit Tengroth's novel about several        storylines united by alienation; and To Joy (1949, 99 mins.), an         examination of the life of a talented orchestral violinist who learns to cope  with the death of his wife (played by Maj-Britt Nilsson). In Swedish with      Ingmar Bergman/Alf Sjoberg---Sweden---1944-1949---474 mins.
FACE TO FACE (BERGMAN)

One of Bergman's first works in color is an audacious work about the             political, social and sexual interplay of four people on a remote Swedish        island, each overcome by associations of guilt, remorse and rage. Sven           Nykvist's explosive use of color establishes dramatic texture and conflict. In a Godardian move, the characters frequently break down and discuss the nature  of their role. With Max Von Sydow, Liv Ullmann, Bibi Andersson and Erland      Josephson. In Swedish with English subtitles.                                    Ingmar Bergman---Sweden---1970---101 mins.

PHANTOM CARRIAGE/ IMAGE MAKERS
Our Price: $89.95

This meta double feature includes two obscure works from the undeniable          masters of Swedish cinema. First, Victor Sjostrom's silent ghost story, The   Phantom Carriage (Korkarlen, 1921), based on the legend of the          coachman of Death being replaced by the last man to die each year. Sjostrom's  film is as famous for its realistic depictions of life in the slums as it is   for its fantasy sequences that make evocative use of double exposures. Next,   Ingmar Bergman's televised production of the Per Olov Enquist play, The       Image Makers (Bildmakarna, 2000). Set in the 1920s at Svensk          Filmindustri, Lennart Hjulstrom plays Bergman's mentor, Sjostrom, as the drama unfolds on the set of The Phantom Carriage. In Swedish with English      Victor Sjostrom/Ingmar Bergman---Sweden---1921/2000---206 mins.

According to Ingmar Bergman, this somber epilogue to his intimate and deeply     moving made-for-TV drama, Scenes From a Marriage, is his final film        statement. It's also his first work in over two decades, and as such it          conjures a mix of joy and sadness that echoes its profound themes. After 30    years of divorce, Marianne (Liv Ullmann) pays an impulsive visit to her        ex-husband Johan (Erland Josephson). Together they explore their shared past,  their inner demons, their relationship with their children, and their            difficulties in growing old. "A dignified farewell [...] for one of cinema's   greatest directors" (Hollywood Reporter). In Swedish with English        Ingmar Bergman---Sweden---2003---107 mins.
