ASTRO BOY (2009)
Our Price: $26.99
Out of Stock

Easily the most expensive screen iteration of Osamu Tezuka's 1950s manga about a robotic boy-turned-defender of a futuristic city, this Astro Boy is a computer animated popcorn movie committed to pushing special effects while not totally alienating fans. "Blending Eastern and Western animation styles, this origin story hews closely to the J-toon’s Pinocchio-inspired source material...What’s ultimately more impressive than the vigorous madcap action and innocuous humor, however, is [director David] Bowers’s willingness to address adult themes" (Time Out New York). Featuring the voices of Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Donald Sutherland, Bill Nighy, and Freddie Highmore as Astroboy.

DARK KNIGHT, THE
Our Price: $34.99
Out of Stock

Move over Empire Strikes Back. Dollars to darkness, this is the bleakest blockbuster of all time. After destabilizing the mob in Batman Begins, "The Batman" (Christian Bale) must find a lawful "white knight" for Gotham City to rally behind so he can de-cape and dedicate himself to Rachel Dawes (now Maggie Gyllenhaal). But Batman's chosen successor, D.A. Harvey Dent (Aaron Eckhart), has also caught the eye of the Joker (Heath Ledger, R.I.P.), a self-described agent of chaos, hell-bent on watching the world burn. Besides riffs on Heat, Seven, A Clockwork Orange, and John Ford westerns, The Dark Knight finds director/co-writer Christopher Nolan unpacking Alan Moore's The Killing Joke, which presents the Joker's origin story and shows the clown to be Batman's psychological sidekick. But there's no origin for the Joker here, only unrelenting ultraviolence and a purposefully bewildering message about torture, terror, security, and privacy. In 2008, you couldn't see the sky for the bat signals.

GREEN HORNET, THE (2010)
Our Price: $28.95

On paper, it sounds crazy: Seth Rogen slims down to play a pulpy superhero in a 3-D franchise starter directed by Michel Gondry. Well, it happened, and it works. After the death of his newspaper magnate father, playboy Britt Reid (Rogen) has to man-up and take the reigns on the family business. But his real efforts to redeem himself happen at night. With the help of his company's number one asset--a martial-arts and weapons expert named Kato (Curse of the Golden Flower's Jay Chou)--Rogen transforms himself into a masked crime fighter...of sorts. Just like when Bruce Lee had the sidekick job, Kato does all the real ass-kicking here. Meanwhile, the Green Hornet provides the "self-conscious, rapid-fire...coarse, anarchic humor" (The New York Times). With Cameron Diaz, Edward Furlong, and Christoph Waltz, evil as usual.

Featuring Blake Lively as his love interest, Peter Sarsgaard as his nemesis, and Mark Strong as another Lantern in training. HELLBOY II GOLDEN ARMY
Our Price: $29.98
Out of Stock

With a more supportive studio (Universal) and a wave of acclaim coming off of    Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo del Toro launched into directing Hellboy     II, based on the pulp-horror comics of Mike Mignola. The story picks up       with Hellboy (Ron Perlman) in a hot-cold relationship with Liz Sherman (Selma  Blair), a fellow agent at the Bureau of Paranormal Research and Defense.       Together with Abe Sapien (Doug Jones) and ectoplasmic newbie Johann Krauss     (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), they go after Prince Nuada (Luke Goss), the         exiled heir to an ancient elven throne, who--with a bunch of Lovecraftian      monsters--is trying to resurrect the Golden Army and conquer mankind. Epic for sure, but also inspired, funny, and risky for a summer blockbuster. The        prologue, a Tolkien-esque, computer-animated puppet show about the origins of    said Golden Army, is so rich that it's a shame the whole movie was not done in this fashion. With Jeffrey Tambor, music by Danny Elfman, and photography by   Guillermo del Toro---USA---2008---120 mins.
