This collection gives Welles admirers the chance to see the director working     firmly within the studio system, as a true outsider, and as a young artist       making his first cinematic experiment. The Stranger (1946, 95 mins.),      made for RKO, is a solid thriller starring Welles, Edward G. Robinson and      Loretta Young in the story of a Nazi war criminal hiding in small town         America. The Trial (1963, 118 mins.) is a "nightmarish, labyrinthine     expressionist comedy" (Jonathan Rosenbaum, Chicago Reader), based on       Franz Kafka's novel and starring Anthony Perkins as Joseph K. Filmed in        France, Italy and Yugoslavia, it is one of the best films Welles made as a     Hollywood outcast. In addition to these two features, this set includes the    short Hearts of Age (1934, 4 mins.), Welles' first film--a silent,         experimental short co-directed by William Vance. Film critic Jeffrey Lyons     provides optional audio commentaries for the films and the disc also includes  theatrical trailers, photo galleries, and a 30-minute documentary on The    Orson Welles/William Vance---USA/France/West Germany/Italy---1934/1946/1963  ---247 mins.

DON QUIXOTE (WELLES)
Our Price: $24.98

A valuable artifact for Orson Welles aficionados, this retelling of              Cervantes's masterpiece is comprised of Welles's raw footage, shot between       1970 and 1976, and reassembled by exploitation filmmaker Jess Franco. While      there is no telling how close in proximity this version is to Welles's true    vision (arguably it is very different), the auteur's images are                characteristically fascinating. What is known of the work suggests that it     could have been one of the director's most formally daring and intricately       sculpted cinematic masterpieces--regardless, the images shown here are bizarre and absorbing. Also known as Don Quijote de Orson Welles.                Orson Welles/Jess Franco---USA/Spain---1992---115 mins.

Film Noir doesn't get as sleazy or as exhilarating as this. Orson Welles'        final Hollywood studio film delves into the seedy underbelly of racism and       opportunism with this examination of a Mexican-American border town murder and   the corpulent police Captain Hank Quinlan (Welles) who may have a hand in it.  Charlton Heston plays a Mexican narcotics officer distrustful of the captain   and Janet Leigh is his new bride, a target of retaliation when her husband     puts the squeeze on both Quinlan and the head of a powerful family of drug       dealers (played to the hilt by Akim Tamiroff). For the first time, all three   versions--the preview version, the theatrical version, and the restored        version based on Welles' vision--are included in this 2-DVD set. Boosting this classic are memorable supporting performances by Marlene Dietrich, Dennis        Weaver and Joseph Calleia. Don't forget to look for uncredited performances by Joseph Cotten as a coroner and Mercedes McCambridge as a gang member who       Orson Welles---USA---1958---112 mins.

Orson Welles considered this masterful adaptation of Franz Kafka's novel the best film of his brilliant career. Anthony Perkins stars as the young clerk Josef K., who is arrested and put on trial without ever knowing his crime. The cast includes Jeanne Moreau and Welles himself. Filmed in a deserted railway station in Paris, the movie captures the nightmarish world of Kafka's mythical police state.
