Two historic documentaries on one volume. Africa Speaks (Paul Hoefler/Walter Futter, USA, 1930, 69 mins.) is explorer Paul Hoefler's sensational account of an expedition in the "Dark Continent," and the first known sound documentary about Africa. Far from a true non-fiction film, it features several sequences clearly staged for the camera (including some non-location scenes) and certainly has a less than scholarly tone. But there's no denying the excitement of some of the remarkable footage of the Wasara tribe of the Congo and African wildlife that Hoefler captured. The Snake Goddess (Armand Denis/Leroy G. Phelps, USA, 30 mins.) is a slightly less manipulated account of the Burma expedition of Armand Denis and Leila Roosevelt. The films also appears to have been produced in the '30s and includes a truly dramatic ritual enacted by a woman face-to-face with a poisonous snake. The print quality of both films is a little soft, but Hoefler/Futter/Dennis/Phelps---USA---1930---99 mins.
