HISTORIC EARLY SPANISH FILMS
Our Price:
$24.95
Copies on the way
Four very early and very rare films from the dawn of Spanish cinema. Few films from this era survive and what does has been nearly impossible to find on video, making this an extremely valuable collection.
El Ciego de Aldea (Blind Man of the Village)
(Jose Maria Codina, Spain, 1906) is the story of a blind man and a little girl who help bring some criminals to justice. Originally released by Films Cuesta, the surviving portion on this volume shows some decomposition, but it is an essential artifact for students of the period.
Amor Que Mata (Love That Kills)
(Fructuos Gelabert, 1909) was the first of two versions by the Film Barcelona studio of a tragic tale of love undone by jealousy and shame. Its director is one of the founding figures of the Spanish cinema and made narrative films as early as 1897. The version included here comes from an export print with English subtitles.
Don Pedro el Cruel
(Ricardo Banos/Albert Marro, 1911) is a surviving segment of a longer film--an historical drama about warring nobility. It is presented as a filmed play, complete with actors bowing to the camera and a curtain opening to reveal the set. Lastly,
Union Que Dios Bendice (The Union That God Blesses)
(Jose Pons Girbau, 1913) is a nearly feature-length film that was considered a lost until its discovery and partial restoration in 1992. It is a melodrama of love and faith presented as a filmed theatrical performance.

This volume surveys early independent U.S. films (1899-1908); seven films by the great magician of the cinema, Georges Melies; comedies produced in England by Clarendon, Gaumont and Hepworth (1903-1905); and Britain's first documentaries (1903- 1905).
PHANTOM CARRIAGE, THE (CRITERION)

Victor Sjostrom's silent ghost story,
The Phantom Carriage
(
Korkarlen
), is based on the legend that the coachman of Death must be replaced by the last man to die each year. The film is as famous for its realistic depictions of life in the slums as it is for its fantasy sequences that make evocative use of double exposures.
SILENT SHAKESPEARE
Our Price:
$29.99

Even before the era of sound and feature-length productions, the work of William Shakespeare was a popular subject for filmmakers, who tackled the Bard's work in abbreviated form. Some of the earliest examples of Shakespeare on film are included on this essential collection of historic silent shorts.
King John
(1899), starring and directed by theatrical legend Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree, is one of the oldest surviving British film dramas. Italy's first movie queen, Francesca Bertini, stars in
Re Lear
(Gerolamo Lo Savio, 1910) and
Il Mercante di Venezia
(Gerolamo Lo Savio, 1910). Also included are American silent treatments of
A Midsummer Night's Dream
(Charles Kent/J. Stuart Blackton, 1909) and
Twelfth Night
(Charles Kent, 1910), and British versions of
The Tempest
(1908) and
Richard II I
(Frank R. Benson, 1911). All seven films were digitally restored to video from the original 35mm nitrate material by the British Film Institute. 88 mins.

THROW OF DICE, A
Our Price:
$29.95
Copies on the way
Though India produced thousands of films during the silent era, only a handful survived. This epic melodrama directed by the German Franz Osten is one of the fortunate ones. Financed by UFA studios, British International Films, and actor/producer Himansu Rai,
A Throw of Dice
boasts a cast of 10,000 and a production design so lavish it would make DeMille blush. The story, inspired by an ancient Sanskrit poem, involves the rivalry of two kings from adjoining lands. They both share a love of gambling, tiger hunting, and have eyes for the same maiden. When she agrees to marry one king, the other challenges his newlywed foe to a bet he cannot refuse--one that requires a very beautiful bartering chip. Starring Himansu Rai, Charu Roy, and Seta Devi. Silent with Franz Osten---India/Great Britain/Germany---1929---74 mins.
