Herbert G. Ponting's chronicle of Captain Robert Scott's heroic and ultimately tragic race for the South Pole was originally released in 1913. Ponting, a renowned still photographer, dedicated his life to the memory of Scott, who died with his entire team on the return trip from the pole after losing the race to Amundsen. Twenty years after his friend's death, Ponting added narration to the film, drawing from Scott's diary entries. This is the deeply personal tribute to the heartbreaking last days of the doomed expedition. Herbert G. Ponting---Great Britain---1933---72 mins.

Maurice Elvey's silent film version of Stanley Houghton's popular 1912 stage play utilizes evocative location shooting (including the mills at Lancashire and the famous Blackpool amusement park) to achieve a proto-documentary realism that's ahead of its time. In the film, two factory girls decide to take a vacation to Blackpool, where one of them meets the wealthy son of a factory owner and begin a torrid affair. When the girl's family discovers what has happened, they force a marriage proposal from the young man, but the girl's final decision is a shocking affront to the rigid morals of her Maurice Elvey---Great Britain---1927---120 mins.

One of the last British silent features, Piccadilly is held in high esteem by many, particularly admirers of E.A. Dupont (Variety), who fee l the director's touch elevates the formulaic material. A beautiful Chinese dancer comes between a nightclub owner and another dancer, leading to murder and mystery. Anna May Wong, Gilda Gray, Jameson Thomas and Cyril Ritchard star. Charles Laughton, in his feature film debut, has a colorful supporting role as disruptive drunk, and Ray Milland appears in a bit part. Shortly afte r the film's original release, new scenes with dialogue were filmed. This, however, is the original silent version. "The melodramatic machinations of the plot may be weak, but Dupont's assured direction, Alfred Junge's art direction, and Werner Brandes' lighting create an atmosphere so hauntingly evocative as to be satisfying in itself" (Robert Murphy, Time Out Film E.A. Dupont---Great Britain---1929---89 mins.

A near-death experience convinces the keeper to marry the girl, but her dark past comes back to haunt them in the form of one of the girl's violent former acquaintances.
