The latest from Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenabar is an historical epic set in 4th-century Alexandria, Egypt, when the subjugated Christian faith came to challenge the empire's established pantheistic religion. At the center of all the controversy is Hypatia, the philosopher whose rational views are in the crossfire, as is her heart, being torn between a dutiful student (Oscar Isaac) of their pagan beliefs and a Christian slave (Max Minghella).
