Description Technical Specs

Directly following the omnibus film Germany in Autumn, filmmaker Alexander Kluge expanded upon his chapter about a teacher named Gabi Teichert (Hanelore Hoger), who, like most of her generation, was still grappling with Germany's terrible past. The Patriot, also known as The Female Patriot and The Patriotic Woman, finds Gabi digging into the ground of a snow-covered landscape--a potent metaphor. She exhumes the skeleton of a dead soldier, and his disconnected knee begins to speak(!). As the knee narrates the film, we learn it belonged to Private Wieland, who was killed at Stalingrad during WWII. Though it's a challenging, eerie concept, the knee acts as a guide through this disparate collection of documentary footage, fairy-tale illustrations, and fictional scenes. "The most ambitious attempt to put the German Question in perspective since Syberberg's Hitler" (The New York Times). In German with English subtitles.
