Hirokazu Kore-eda (After Life) won Best Director at the Asian Film Awards for this bittersweet family drama that recalls the best of Ozu in its beauty and seeming simplicity. Still Walking spends a full day with a normal Japanese clan--two aging parents, their grown children, and their grandchildren--who reunite to mark the drowning death of their favored son 15 years before. As they take-in the idyllic landscape and share traditional meals together, we learn more and more about the characters' tensions and frustrations, even though they cannot verbalize or fully process such feelings.
