Truly weird and deliriously dated, Can't Stop the Music is one of those    Hollywood absurdities that was destined for cult classic status. The late '70s   disco wave had reached its peak and was beginning to fade when this feature      film vehicle for The Village People came out. Although the gay content that    made the group famous was subdued, there are plenty of gay in-jokes as the     film tells a highly fictionalized tale of the group's formation. A straight    romance can't undo the film's gaudy, camp surface. Valerie Perrine, Steven       Guttenberg, and Olympic champion Bruce Jenner also star. As if the film needed another novelty, it was directed by Nancy Walker, best known as the mother of  TV's Rhoda and from the Bounty paper towel commercials.                  Nancy Walker---USA---1980---119 mins.
