Fate brings together a poor black woman and the racist white prison guard who was on duty when her husband was executed. Billy Bob Thornton is excellent as the guard whose humanity overcomes his hateful upbringing and Halle Berry won an Academy Award for her role as the tragic woman who finds unlikely solace with him. Heath Ledger, Peter Boyle and hip hop performer Sean "Puffy" Combs also star in the film Roger Ebert selected as the best of 2001.
