After playing with film noir conventions in Out of Sight, Steven Soderbergh pushed his stylistic choices for the genre even further in this strong, wonderfully acted crime drama. Soderbergh again uses some elliptical editing strategies, but in this film the technique is pushed to near-experimental extremes to tell the tale of an aging British ex-con who comes to L.A. to avenge the death of his daughter. Terence Stamp commands the screen as the title character and Peter Fonda is equally good as the spoiled, somewhat slimy, record producer who may be responsible for the girl's death.
