Subtly disturbing, with great insights into male psychology, Laurent Cantet's    fine film is a deceptively simple story of a man's increasing agitation and      alienation during a New Year's holiday. Francois takes his family and friends    on an island getaway to escape the manic celebrations in Paris. His dream of a peaceful and intimate gathering is made impossible by a young caretaker who    seems to embody everything he dislikes, although the others do not share his   feelings. The tension rises, leading to a bleak yet ambiguous climax on New      Year's Eve. One of the best of eight features commissioned by French           television for the 2000 Seen by... series.
