Breaking away somewhat from the state doctrine of "social realist" filmmaking,   this high-spirited East German musical was a huge success among young            audiences and its soundtrack of chanson and rock songs dominated the country's   pop music charts. Two groups of students hitchhike to the Baltic Sea during    their summer vacation, engaging in pranks and romantic flirtations. The pop    duo of Frank Schobel and Chris Doerk played the leading roles and also         contributed their songs to the film. Like Grease in America a decade       later, this frothy piece of escapism was an unexpected hit at a time when      movie musicals seemed beyond revival.
