Description

With an all-Indian crew, Hopi filmmaker Victor Masayesva visited tribal          communities in Arizona, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, Washington, and the   Amazon to produce this film. Masayesva presents a Native perspective on the      misrepresentation of Native Americans in feature films. Using a combination of scripted scenes, documentary and feature archival footage, and interviews, he  weaves a complex narrative to show the ways in which native Americans react    to, attempt to work with, or overtly resist their representation by the          dominant white culture. Intercut through all this is a sub-theme about how a   romanticized "noble savage" view of American Indians has gone hand-in-hand     with the commercialism and appropriation of their arts and material culture.   Includes an eye-opening Native American look at the depictions of Native         Americans in the films of Kevin Costner and Robert Redford.                    Victor Masayesva, Jr.---USA---1992---60 mins.
