Description

In this intrepid drama by Benoit Jacquot (The Disenchanted, The School of the Flesh), Isild Le Besco plays Lili, a young, beautiful, bored art student who impetuously falls in love with a small-time hood, Bada (Ouassini Embarek).  After a botched bank robbery that ends in murder, Lili agrees to flee Paris with her wanted boyfriend. Disentranced and on the lam, she soon finds herself in compromising situations, both physical and metaphysical. This adaptation of Elisabeth Fanger's memoir When I Was 19 is partly a tale of youthful naivety gone awry, but also, with its plot and setting in mind, an homage to the French New Wave, especially Elevator to the Gallows, Les Bonnes Femmes, and Breathless. "Gorgeous black-and-white photography lends the movie a chilly documentary realism . . . Small, nearly perfect film" (Stephen Holden, The New York Times). In French with English subtitles.
