Description

Four very early and very rare films from the dawn of Spanish cinema. Few films   from this era survive and what does has been nearly impossible to find on        video, making this an extremely valuable collection. El Ciego de Aldea        (Blind Man of the Village) (Jose Maria Codina, Spain, 1906) is the story of a blind man and a little girl who help bring some criminals to justice.        Originally released by Films Cuesta, the surviving portion on this volume      shows some decomposition, but it is an essential artifact for students of the    period. Amor Que Mata (Love That Kills) (Fructuos Gelabert, 1909) was    the first of two versions by the Film Barcelona studio of a tragic tale of     love undone by jealousy and shame. Its director is one of the founding figures of the Spanish cinema and made narrative films as early as 1897. The version     included here comes from an export print with English subtitles. Don Pedro  el Cruel (Ricardo Banos/Albert Marro, 1911) is a surviving segment of a     longer film--an historical drama about warring nobility. It is presented as a  filmed play, complete with actors bowing to the camera and a curtain opening     to reveal the set. Lastly, Union Que Dios Bendice (The Union That God       Blesses) (Jose Pons Girbau, 1913) is a nearly feature-length film that was  considered a lost until its discovery and partial restoration in 1992. It is a melodrama of love and faith presented as a filmed theatrical performance.
