Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers tap their way through five of their most beloved musicals--timeless screen treasures boasting lively tunes, superlative choreography, and top-notch performances. Top Hat (Mark Sandrich, 1935, 97 mins.) is arguably the best-remembered of the duo's films. It blends Art Deco elegance, a mistaken-identity plot, and an Irving Berlin score into an Academy Award-winning whole. Swing Time (George Stevens, 1936, 103 mins.) is a Depression-era gem starring Astaire as a gambler who falls head-over-heels for dance instructor Ginger Rogers. Follow the Fleet (Mark Sandrich, 1936, 110 mins.) finds Astaire donning a sailor's cap for a screen adaptation of Shore Leave. The seven sparkling Irving Berlin numbers include "Let Yourself Go", "We Saw the Sea", and the forever famous "Let's Face the Music and Dance". In Shall We Dance (Mark Sandrich, 1937, 116 mins.), Rogers plays a musical comedy star whose tour manager (Jerome Cowan) suggests to the press that she's married to a world-class ballet dancer (Astaire). The stars hoof and pirouette their way through a series of hilarious misunderstandings. Finally, The Barkleys of Broadway (Charles Walters, 1949, 109 mins.) marks the final collaboration between the legendary pair.
