Peter Greenaway's fascinating essay on death and revolution is set in the        period between April 1795 and September 1801, when over 300 bodies were pulled   from the River Seine in Paris. Two mortuary attendants dutifully noted the       condition of each body in great detail, including their clothing, possessions  and wounds.
