Description

From French director Jean-Pierre Limosin (Novo) comes this documentary film on the shadow world of the Japanese mafia. Mrs. Watanabe, the mother of unemployed, petty criminal Naoki, gives her son to the local yakuza boss. The film tracks Naoki's apprenticeship, as he slowly earns the crime organization's trust by performing such basic tasks as making tea and acting as security thug. This might explain why our young yakuza goes missing halfway through the production. Though this mystery is engaging enough, the main allure of Young Yakuza is candid footage of yakuza higher-ups explaining the organization's difficulties with recruitment and law enforcement in modern Japan. An Official Selection at Cannes. In Japanese with English subtitles.    Jean-Pierre Limosin---France---2007---99 mins.
