This epic WWII biopic is based on the real life of Japanese admiral Takijiro Onishi, the so-called "Father of the Kamikaze." Though he did not actually invent kamikaze, his vigor for ordering these suicide attacks on U.S. aircraft carriers was legend. The narrative tracks Onishi through his battles in the Pacific to the eventual Japanese surrender, when he performed ritual suicide to atone for the thousands of pilots he sent to watery graves.
