A contemporary of Satyajit Ray, Bengali filmmaker Mrinal Sen was more influenced by the French New Wave and his resulting political modernist films helped define a "parallel cinema" in relation to India's tradition of popular musical entertainments. Antareen is a romance involving a writer (Anjan Dutt) who receives an accidental phone call from a woman (Dimple Kapadia) on the other side of Calcutta.
