The life's work of two legends of avant-garde cinema is included in this seven-disc collection. Lawrence Jordan's collage-style animation--which influenced the early work of Terry Gilliam, among others--combines 19th-century engravings, symbols, icons, and modern imagery to construct elegant, dream-like stories that enchant and enthrall. The Lawrence Jordan Album (1957-2007, 465 mins.) consists of short animations like Moonlight Sonata, the animated retelling of Samuel Taylor Coleridge's The Rime of the Ancient Mariner (narrated by Orson Welles), a trilogy of films dedicated to poet and novelist Hilda Doolittle, and much more. In the case of James Broughton, the director's very personal work opened the door for diary films with an eye toward the erotic and the poetic. The Films of James Broughton (1948-1988, 290 mins.) includes 17 of his films, ranging from Mother's Day up through Scattered Remains.
