According to the productions in this set, Old Mexico was filled with handsome men, beautiful women, deep passion, and true romance. My Dead Tom Mix (Carlos Garcia Agraz, 1991, 120 mins.) tells the story of Joaquina, who has never married, but makes up for it by going to see silent movies and letting her imagination run wild. One day, she takes her fantasies too far and writes a letter to the legendary western hero Tom Mix, "the King of the Cowboys," imploring him to save her small village from marauding bandits. Called "a charming conceit" by Time Out, My Dear Tom Mix features many veteran stars and character actors, including Ana Ofelia Murguia (The Garden of Eden), Federico Luppi (Pan's Labyrinth), and heartthrob Eduardo Palomo. This is joined by Don't Fool With Love, a trilogy of short films inspired by the stories of Nobel Prize-winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez. In The Two Way Mirror (Carlos Garcia Agraz, 1990, 27 mins.), a young woman about to wed the son of a prominent family discovers that she can see through time in her bedroom mirror, which begins a steamy romance with a 19th-century soldier. In Saturday Night Thief (Jose Luis Garcia Agraz, 1992, 25 mins.), a lonely woman whose husband is away finds herself strangely attracted to the bandit who breaks into her mansion. And in Far Apart (1991, 27 mins.), famed Cuban director Tomas Gutierrez Alea spins a tragic yarn about two lovers' marriage plans that go awry one fateful night in 1956, and a letter received by the would-be bride 35 years later. In Spanish with English subtitles.
