The critical reaction to this Woody Allen ensemble piece was nearly as divided as the film's dueling storylines. The seasoned director explicitly teases out the strands of comedy and tragedy that have long enlivened his work by setting them side by side. In both versions, Melinda (Radha Mitchell) crashes a dinner party following a bitter divorce and lost custody of her children. As Allen intercuts the comic and tragic possibilities, he reveals that one is never very far apart from the other. With Will Ferrell and Amanda Peet in the comic storyline, and Chloe Sevigny and Johnny Lee Miller in the tragic one.
